A young woman who went viral after tearing out her own eyes during a meth-induced psychotic episode says she has “no regrets,” even after being fired from her job.Kaylee Muthart, from Anderson, South Carolina, was 20 years old in 2018 when, while high on crystal meth, she suffered a terrifying hallucination that convinced her the world would end unless she sacrificed her eyesight. In the grip of the delusion, she pulled out both of her eyeballs with her fingers.
A pastor found her screaming, still holding the damaged eyes in her hands. The incident left her permanently blind. After the ordeal, Kaylee got sober, went to rehab, and attempted to rebuild her life. She later found work washing dishes at a local restaurant while continuing her education. However, she was recently fired—and says she accepts it without regret.
Kaylee explained to the Mirror that she lost her job for secretly taking leftover food from the restaurant to feed a starving cat and her eight kittens. After the owner warned her to stop and she refused, she was dismissed. “Being fired never feels good,” she said, “but I walked away knowing I did what was right. I couldn’t ignore a hungry kitty waiting outside every night.”
Though losing the job was difficult, Kaylee says she remains positive and at peace with her choice. She now wears prosthetic eyes, saying they help her feel more comfortable around others. Despite her challenges, she insists she is happier sober: “I’d rather be blind than dependent on drugs.”
