The Iconic ‘Shopaholic’ Author Dies at 55

Posted on December 12, 2025 By admin

Madeleine Sophie Wickham — better known by her pen name Sophie Kinsella — enchanted readers worldwide with wit, warmth, and irresistible charm. Born in London in 1969, she began her career as a financial journalist before discovering her true calling: writing lighthearted, heartfelt novels that resonated with millions. Her 2000 novel The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic (published in the U.S. as Confessions of a Shopaholic) introduced the world to the unforgettable Becky Bloomwood — and sparked a best‑selling series that became a cultural phenomenon.

In the decades that followed, she authored more than 30 books — spanning adult, young‑adult, and children’s fiction — selling over 45–50 million copies across dozens of languages and countries. Her novels — like The Undomestic Goddess, Can You Keep a Secret?, Twenties Girl, and many more — were beloved for their humor, relatability, and heart.

She had a rare gift for creating characters whose flaws, dreams, and everyday struggles felt deeply human. But in late 2022, Sophie was diagnosed with a form of aggressive brain cancer — a diagnosis she kept private until 2024.

On December 10, 2025, her family announced that she passed away peacefully at home in Dorset at the age of 55, surrounded by loved ones. Though she is gone, Sophie’s voice — warm, witty, compassionate — lives on in her books. Her stories will continue to inspire laughter, comfort, and hope for readers around the world.
