She Invited the Wrong Person to Thanksgiving — What Followed Lasted 10 Years

Posted on January 4, 2026 By admin

A simple texting mistake turned into a heartwarming Thanksgiving tradition that has now lasted a decade. Ten years ago, Arizona grandmother Wanda Dench meant to text her grandson about Thanksgiving plans, but accidentally messaged a stranger instead. That stranger was teenager Jamal Hinton, who asked her to confirm who she was by sending a photo. Realizing her mistake, Dench expected the conversation to end — but Hinton replied with a joke asking if he could still get a plate of food.

Dench said yes, and that unexpected exchange sparked a friendship neither of them anticipated. Since that day, Dench and Hinton have met every year for Thanksgiving. In 2025, they are celebrating their 10th holiday together, a tradition that has captured hearts online and repeatedly gone viral. Speaking to People, Dench said she believes their connection was meant to be.

“I know it was fate,” she said. “I feel grateful and blessed every day because I never would’ve met someone as wonderful as Jamal otherwise.” Hinton echoed the sentiment, saying their story continues to bring joy to people around the world. “People get excited every year to see us together,” he said. “Knowing our story makes people happy means everything.”

This year’s reunion is especially meaningful, as the pair are partnering with Green Giant, which is also celebrating its 100th anniversary. While many holiday traditions fade over time, this one — born from a simple mistake — continues to thrive, reminding people that kindness, humor, and an open heart can turn even the smallest moment into something lasting.
