Before You Go on Vacation, Don’t Forget to Check Your Sink

Posted on January 17, 2026 By admin

When preparing for a vacation, most people focus on obvious tasks like locking doors, adjusting the thermostat, and cleaning out the refrigerator. While these steps are important, one small detail is often overlooked: sinks and drains. When left unused for days or weeks, they can quietly contribute to unpleasant odors and a stale feeling inside the home. Taking a moment to address this before leaving can help ensure a fresher return.

Every sink has a curved pipe underneath called a P-trap, which holds a small amount of water. This water creates a seal that prevents sewer gases and insects from entering the home. During regular use, the seal is constantly refreshed. However, when a house sits empty, the water in the trap can slowly evaporate. Once that happens, odors can rise through the drain, leading to the musty smells many people notice after coming back from vacation.

A simple and inexpensive solution can help reduce this issue. Before leaving, place a paper towel over the sink drain and cover it with an upside-down glass. The towel helps block odors and insects, while the glass keeps it in place. This method allows slight airflow, preventing moisture buildup without creating an airtight seal.

For best results, flush the drain with hot water, then pour a small amount of white vinegar down it to reduce residue and neutralize odors. Dry the sink basin before covering the drain. This quick routine takes only minutes but can make your home feel cleaner and more welcoming when you return.
