Polish speedskater Kamila Sellier has shared a positive recovery update after being injured during the women’s 1,500-metre event at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. The 25-year-old was involved in a high-speed collision that left her with a facial cut near her left eye after being struck by a skate blade. The incident brought the race to a halt and sparked concern among fans worldwide.
The crash involved Italy’s Arianna Fontana and American skater Kristen Santos-Griswold. After a review, Santos-Griswold received a penalty for an illegal lane pass and did not advance beyond the quarter-finals. Fontana continued competing and later finished fifth, while Sellier was taken off the ice on a stretcher and transported to a hospital. As she left the rink, she reassured spectators with a thumbs-up gesture.
Polish officials confirmed that Sellier underwent surgery later that evening and was in good condition. Doctors are conducting additional tests to ensure there was no damage to her eye. Teammates described the incident as emotional but noted that accidents, while rare, can happen due to the sport’s speed and intensity. Sellier received stitches and remains under medical supervision.
In a message shared from her hospital bed, Sellier thanked fans for their support and said she was recovering well. She expressed optimism about her return to competition. Meanwhile, South Korea’s Kim Gilli and Choi Min-jeong claimed gold and silver, with American Corinne Stoddard earning bronze.
