A Historic First: Melania Trump Takes On Role No First Lady Has Held Before

Melania Trump is set to make history as the only First Lady of the United States to take on a new and significant role focused on national and global wellbeing. Now serving her second term as First Lady, Melania has long emphasized child safety and online protection. During Donald Trump’s first presidency, she launched the Be Best initiative, aimed at promoting children’s wellbeing and combating cyberbullying. When Trump left office in 2021, she reflected on the program’s impact, highlighting its role in raising awareness, encouraging kindness, and building partnerships to help children overcome daily challenges.

She is now stepping onto the global stage by presiding over the United Nations Security Council — becoming the first First Lady in history, from any country, to do so. The UN Security Council consists of 15 member states, including five permanent members: the United States, China, France, Russia, and the United Kingdom. Ten additional non-permanent members serve two-year terms.

According to reports, Melania will oversee the Council during the United States’ presidency session. The Council focuses on peace, security, education, and technology — areas closely aligned with her longstanding advocacy. Sources say her first address will center on “empowering the next generation,” particularly through education and technology. Supporters describe the move as a natural extension of her mission to protect and uplift children worldwide.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Michael Waltz called it fitting that a dedicated advocate for children would preside during America’s term, noting that lasting peace begins when children are educated and protected. Melania is also expected to continue advancing her Be Best platform and the Take It Down Act, signed into law in May 2025, targeting online exploitation and non-consensual content.
