Woman Raises $900K for 78-Year-Old DoorDash Driver Who Took the Job to Pay for His Wife’s Medication

A simple act of kindness has turned into something life-changing for a 78-year-old DoorDash driver named Richard. The story began when Brittany Smith from Tennessee noticed her daughter had received another Starbucks delivery. Initially annoyed, she checked her Ring doorbell camera and was surprised to see an elderly man struggling to climb the stairs with the order.

“This poor guy is struggling to get up my stairs,” she said. Her daughter’s father, who had placed the order, is a quadriplegic and often relies on deliveries. Moved by what she saw, Brittany wanted to increase the tip, but it wasn’t possible through the app. Instead, she posted a short video of Richard on social media. The clip quickly went viral, with many people asking how they could help.

With help from someone who recognized him, Brittany found Richard’s home and personally gave him a $200 tip. Even then, he hesitated to accept it, wanting to make sure she’d be okay financially. Richard later shared that he had taken the DoorDash job after his wife lost her job. With high medication costs and bills, the couple had little money left.

Touched by his story, Brittany created a GoFundMe to help him return to retirement. The response was overwhelming. The fundraiser has now raised over $930,000, and the total keeps growing. According to Brittany, Richard hasn’t been able to stop checking the page. “He hasn’t slept in two days,” she said. “He’s even more special in person.”
