LEGENDARY ‘POLICE WOMAN’ AND ‘SHAFT’ ACTOR ED BERNARD PASSES AWAY AT 86

Ed Bernard, the versatile character actor best known for his roles in Police Woman and The White Shadow, has died at the age of 86. His family confirmed he passed away on January 23 in Northridge, California. Born in 1939 in Philadelphia, Bernard built a steady and respected career across film and television. He began on stage before transitioning to the screen in the early 1970s, making his film debut in Shaft. He went on to appear in films like Across 110th Street and The Hot Rock.

His breakthrough came with Police Woman, where he played undercover detective Joe Styles alongside Angie Dickinson. The show ran from 1974 to 1978 and became a major success, helping define an era of television. Bernard appeared in 90 episodes and played a key role in the series’ impact.

He later gained recognition as Principal Jim Willis in The White Shadow, a show that explored social issues through sports and education. Bernard’s character brought authority and depth to the series. Throughout his career, he appeared in numerous popular shows, including Kojak, Mannix, ER, NYPD Blue, and Cold Case. His final on-screen role came in 2005.

Beyond acting, Bernard was remembered by his family as a devoted father, grandfather, and a man of faith with a love for learning and cooking. Though never a headline-seeking star, his consistent work left a lasting mark on television. He is survived by his two sons and four grandchildren, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and quiet influence.
