Just one day after the conclave began in Rome, the College of Cardinals has elected a new pope: Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost.

In a surprise decision, Prevost—an American born in Chicago and known for his moderate stance—was chosen over several expected frontrunners. He will take the name Pope Leo XIV.

His appointment comes after the death of Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Sunday, April 21, at the age of 88.
