“Woke” Pope Leo XIV slammed by MAGA supporters

White smoke rose over the Vatican as American Robert Francis Prevost, 69, was elected the new Pope, taking the name Leo XIV, the first “Leo” in over a century. He appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to greet the crowd, delivering a message of peace and unity. Born in Chicago and raised in a devout Catholic family, Leo XIV joined the Augustinians early in life and spent many years in Peru as a missionary and later as Bishop of Chiclayo. Known for his warmth, humility, and love of singing and cooking, he was widely respected by colleagues.

Leo XIV is the first American Pope and holds dual U.S.-Peruvian citizenship. He previously held key Vatican positions and has supported climate action, social inclusion, and Pope Francis’s reforms. Despite not being seen as a frontrunner, he was elected after a two-day conclave.
