Our Gender Reveal Cake Was Grey

After years of struggling with infertility and undergoing an emotional IVF journey, my husband Tom and I were finally expecting a baby. We were especially thrilled to share the news with his six-year-old daughter, Madison, who I’ve loved as my own from the start. She had longed for a sibling praying, drawing pictures, even picking out baby names. On the day of our gender reveal party, she wore her favorite dress, excited to cut the cake and discover whether she was getting a brother or sister.

The party buzzed with anticipation, but everything shifted when we cut into the cake. Instead of pink or blue, the inside was a flat, lifeless grey. Guests looked around in confusion as Tom pulled out his phone to call the bakery. Then we noticed Maddie was missing. I found her upstairs, curled on her bed in tears, whispering that “Granny” said the baby couldn’t be real because I wasn’t able to have children.
