5-Year-Old Tells Mom He Has An ‘Identical Twin’ At School, She Breaks Down When Teacher Sends Photo

When Britney Tankersley’s son, Myles, expressed his desire to match with a classmate for their school’s “Twin Day,” she initially felt annoyed by the last-minute request. It was already 8 p.m., and she had no information about the classmate or their mother. Furthermore, she didn’t have any matching outfits prepared.

After an hour of searching, Tankersley managed to find the other mother and decided to go to Walmart with her son. They settled on “Future Leader” button-down shirts, as those were the only suitable options available in the boys’ sizes.

Speaking to TODAY, Tankersley shared her initial feelings, saying, “He went on and on about how they looked exactly the same. ‘We both have brown eyes, we both have dark hair,’ and he was just adamant… so I head to Walmart, and I’m like, irritated. I’m like, this is too late. I’m too old for this.”

A Surprising Resemblance
Before Myles left for kindergarten the next morning, Tankersley asked his teacher to send a photo of Myles and his twin if possible. Despite knowing they didn’t physically resemble each other, she wanted to see the connection her son felt. When she received the picture from the teacher, it brought her to tears.

Tankersley expressed her emotions, saying, “I was basically crying because it was so sweet… Obviously, I know that they don’t look alike at all. But he didn’t see that, you know? I expect to get a picture of another white child with light skin and brown hair, whatever, but I didn’t get that at all. And I said, ‘That is the sweetest thing in the whole world.’”

Overwhelmed by the heartwarming moment, Tankersley decided to share the photo on her personal Facebook page, which unexpectedly gained over 200,000 shares.

An Unexpected Friendship
Tankersley revealed that Myles and his classmate, Tanner, have become the best of friends. Living just a few minutes away from each other, their families have even spent time together since Twin Day.

“The teachers at school are so excited,” Tankersley shared. “There are always many kids who dress up, even if they don’t look alike, but this was unique. It made me realize that my expectations were completely different from reality, and that’s what made it so special.”

Tankersley emphasized that her intention was never to seek the spotlight. Instead, she believes the message of acceptance and friendship is far more important than the viral attention the photo received.
