25-Year-Old Officer Dies After Being Struck at Crash Scene

Posted on October 26, 2025 By admin

A 25-year-old La Mesa police officer, Lauren Craven, was tragically killed after being struck by a vehicle while helping crash victims on Interstate 8 in California. Authorities said the incident occurred around 10:24 p.m. on October 20, when Craven stopped to assist two motorists involved in a collision near Fairmount Avenue. While rendering aid, she was hit by an oncoming vehicle. Despite immediate efforts from emergency crews, she died at the scene.

Craven had been returning to La Mesa from San Diego Central Jail when the accident happened. The La Mesa Police Department described her actions as “selfless,” saying her final moments reflected her lifelong dedication to protecting others. “Officer Craven’s tenacity, courage, and compassion inspired her peers and strengthened her community,” the department wrote in a public statement. “Her legacy of service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.”

Craven joined the force in February 2024 and served in the Patrol Division. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident, and no further details about the other drivers have been released. Her father, David Craven, shared a moving tribute from their hometown in Bend, Oregon.

He said Lauren had just turned 25 on October 7 and was inspired to join law enforcement after a detective helped her through a traumatic event in college. “She wanted to be that good cop for anyone who needs me,” he said. “Lauren wasn’t just my daughter — she was my best friend.”
