Sad news has emerged from the world of classic television: Jay North, the former child star who played the mischievous title character in CBS’ hit sitcom Dennis the Menace, has passed away at the age of 73. North rose to fame between 1959 and 1963, charming audiences with his bright personality and unforgettable portrayal of Dennis Mitchell. His role became one of the most recognizable characters of early American television, making him a household name during the show’s successful four-year run.
The news of his passing was shared by longtime friend, producer, and writer Laurie Jacobson. In a Facebook post, she explained that Jeanne Russell—North’s co-star who played Margaret on the show—had called with the heartbreaking update. Jacobson revealed that North had been battling cancer for several years.
“This morning at noon EST, Jay passed peacefully at home,” she wrote, adding that although the news was deeply sad, it was not unexpected given his lengthy health struggles. Fans will remember North not only for his iconic childhood role but also for the challenges he faced growing up in Hollywood.

Despite the difficulties, he remained appreciative of the support from viewers who followed his journey long after Dennis the Menace ended. Jay North leaves behind a legacy cherished by generations who grew up laughing with television’s original lovable troublemaker.
