Teen Idol Johnny Tillotson, known for ‘Poetry in Motion,’ has passed away

Johnny Tillotson, the Grammy-nominated singer behind Poetry in Motion, has passed away at 86. Known for his smooth voice and kind heart, he was a rare talent who excelled in rock, pop, and country.

Born in 1938 in Jacksonville, Florida, Tillotson rose to fame with Poetry in Motion (No. 2 on Billboard in 1961) and Without You (No. 7 in 1962). He helped pioneer the countrypolitan sound and wrote hits like It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin’, covered by legends like Elvis Presley and Dean Martin.

Though his last studio album came in 1977, he continued touring and recording, releasing his final single, Everything I Touch Turns to Blue, just days before his passing.

Tillotson died from complications of Parkinson’s disease, survived by his wife of 45 years, Nancy, his children, grandchildren, and extended family. Nancy shared a heartfelt tribute, calling him “funny, generous, and kind” and thanking fans for making his dreams come true.
