Acclaimed singer Tony Butala, founding member of The Lettermen, dies at 85

In a November 1, 2026, Facebook tribute, The Lettermen remembered their co-founder as a gifted entertainer whose greatest pleasure was connecting with audiences. Born in Sharon, Pennsylvania, Butala began performing as a child before moving to Hollywood and joining the Mitchell Boys Choir. He later helped build the vocal group celebrated for songs including “The Way You Look Tonight” and “When I Fall in Love.” Its distinctive three-part harmonies became his enduring contribution to popular music.

Butala stepped away from performing in 2019, but the group continued the tradition he helped establish. His colleagues recalled his warmth with a simple observation: “Tony never met a stranger.” Their tribute also referenced “Smile,” his last public solo, as a fitting farewell. There will be no public viewing; celebrations of life are planned in Wisconsin and California. Those wishing to honor him are encouraged to donate to the Lakeshore Humane Society in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
